When Russll was 11 years old, he sang a song called, "His Eye is on the Sparrow."
youtu.be/-M_rP3h-a4c The song is about God's concern for even the smallest and least significant of His creatures, the sparrow. The sparrow is not pretty, it is plain, it is not meaningful, it is one of many, it is not important, it is needed. Russell recognized that all of us are sparrows and need to know that we are pretty, have meaning to someone, are important to ourselves and others, and are needed and need to be loved.
Listen to the words as Russell sings:
Why should I be discouraged and why should the shadows fall?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion, my constant Friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
I sing because I'm happy;
I sing because I'm free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.
Why should I be discouraged and why should the shadows fall?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion, my constant Friend is He,
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
I sing because I'm happy;
I sing because I'm free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.
Let not your heart be troubled; these tender words I hear;
And resting on his goodness I lose my doubts and fears;
For by the path He leadeth but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.
I sing because I'm happy;
I sing because I'm free;
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.
